The film follows Rodney Copperbottom, a young idealistic inventor from Rivet Town who dreams of making the world a better place through his creations. Inspired by the legendary inventor Bigweld, Rodney travels to Robot City to join Bigweld Industries, only to discover that the company has been taken over by the profit-obsessed Phineas T. Ratchet.
